Disoriented to time during the stay-home order?

COVID has caused a lot of changes for people. One notable change is the complete shift in how people structure their days. If you have ever noticed your drive to and from anywhere familiar, you eventually know by the landmarks where you are going and drive on more of an autopilot navigation. The same phenomenon is showing itself to be true of how we keep track of time during the stay-home order. 
The original markers throughout our days that mark where we are at in our day have changed or been eliminated. That leads to changes in how we recognize where we are at in the day, week or even the month. Lots of clients are complaining about how forgetful they seem to be lately. I think it has everything to do with the loss of these ritualistic markers. Because of the loss of structure, we struggle to know where we are at in time. Overnight, the "landmarks" of time have disappeared. This creates a sense of disorientation to time. It's time to create new ones.

Self Care During the Stay Home Order

LOTS of people are wrestling with the stay-home order. Introverts are more likely to be doing better, although they are still in some pain. Some extroverts are desperate enough to risk COVID just for some social interaction. Everyone is wrestling in one way or another along the continuum. Many have found helpful ways to navigate the "new normal." Here are some ideas that seem to be useful. They are a compilation of my own ideas, ideas I have read about, and ideas that clients have come up with themselves or reinforced as useful.

Come up with structure and boundaries.  Working from home can be like being in a Las Vegas nightclub, no sense of time, no breaks. Make sure to structure time to eat, rest, and take small breaks. Working from home is actually a very flexible thing if done correctly. I hear too many stories of people waking up, and immediately getting on their computers. Breakfast, and showering are still important. No offense if you shower some other time of the day. …

Reopening The Economy in Phases

There is a lot of frustrating talk about opening up the USA. At least, what I have seen and heard in the last 48 hours has been frustrating. People are tired, scared, suffering, and confused. Hence, the desire to find some useful information. From what I hear, the governors are in charge and the governors of the Midwest are working together in a team. I continue to be impressed by Gov. Cuomo of NY and the governors of the Midwest as they work to help us navigate this viral beast.

Here is a helpful article describing the plan outlined by Drs. Fauci and Birx. I hope people will heed their advice, and proceed with sensibility and care. I picked up a small order from Kohl's today and they are doing pick up in your trunk; the employee was wearing gloves and a mask. The local gas station has signs posted that gloves are available for people who need them to pump gas. 4.17.20 Update

With all of the hype about what is happening and how things are being handled, I like getting info from direct sources, and have been encouraging others to do so. Staying out of the weeds is important to stay balanced, and it's good self-care. Here is a link to the website where there are regular updates on the stay-home policy and other COVID updates. 

The Daily Numbers

Dr. Flynn has provided another update along with the following explanation:

Reported cases of Covid19 in Michigan (blue line) grew today by about 7% compared to two days ago, which is about where we’ve been for the past six days (yellow line). So the curve is flattening, it’s just taking its time. Our death rates today (red line) continue to climb at about 17% compared to two days before, which is similar to where it’s been for the past six days (green line).

Helpful Resources During COVID-19

People seem to need better places to find helpful information about how to navigate the psychological and emotional impact of COVID-19. I decided to start this blog to begin sharing what I find useful. I do not consider myself an expert on the topic of viruses. I'm just happy to share what I find helpful.

      Some of my favorite articles covering both medical and economic/financial impacts come from Yahoo Finance News. There articles seem to be full of information from credible sources, medical doctors, etc. I find these full of important updates about what is being done to help resolve the crisis. They are written from factual, non-inflammatory perspectives. 

      I also enjoy podcasts on the topic produced by Sam Harris (Making Sense with Sam Harris) and Joe Rogan. They had some experts on in the beginning of this (late February, early March) who spoke factually about the impact we were going to experience and what it was going to take to fix this. They have been correct.
